6 Ways To Reduce Waste On Halloween

Halloween is right around the corner, and we here at Naturally Sensible couldn’t be more excited! The costumes, the parties, and the all-around spookiness are so much fun.

But with all of the ghosts and gore there comes a great deal of WASTE. Wasted money, wasted plastic wrappers, and even the precious pumpkins are wasted as they are used for decorations and then tossed out with the trash.

What if we told you that you can enjoy the frightful festivities in a sustainable way… and it’s just as much fun?

We’ve compiled a list of the best low-waste Halloween hacks to help you save money and reduce your carbon footprint:

Get Creative With Your Costume

It takes zero thought to go and drop a good deal of money on a costume at a Halloween store. A costume that will likely only be worn once for a few hours. You know who the real winners of the costume contest are? The clever people who use what they have, can borrow from a friend, or find in a thrift shop to put together something creative. (Check out this article for some inspiration!)

If you need face paint, here is a homemade recipe with natural ingredients

Purchase Organic Pumpkins From Local Farmers

We love supporting local farmers and growers whenever we can, and the nicest looking pumpkins we have seen have been at the markets or roadside stands. When you carve them, save the insides for your favorite recipes (pumpkin pie, anyone?), roast the seeds with a little olive oil and sea salt, and compost the rest!

Make Your Own Decorations

Decorating for holidays can get really expensive. Why spend the money when you can make your own? This is a great way to spend some time with your kids, too. Check out this list of eco-friendly DIY Halloween decor.

Skip The Wrappers For Your Trick-Or-Treaters

Kids get a ridiculous amount of candy for Halloween, which equates to an absurd amount of single-use plastic wrappers going straight to the garbage. Try handing out something different this year, like pencils, apples, small packs of crayons, or even bamboo toothbrushes. (Their moms will thank you!)

Take A Reusable Bag

Speaking of trick-or-treating, take a reusable bag. Pillowcases, reusable buckets, or canvas totes are a great alternative to single-use plastic bags.

Leave The Car At Home And Walk

If you can, park the car and enjoy your own street or neighborhood on foot when you head out on Halloween. It is better for the environment, great exercise, and will make for fun memories for the whole family.

We hope you all have a safe, happy, and low-waste Halloween!
